U10 and U12 Weekend Update: 3/8 + 3/9

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

Hope you are well and enjoying the week.  A big congrats to all of our U12s and U10s who raced on Sunday.  There were some amazing results and a lot of fun was had – plus the U10s brought home the Golden Helmet, the MVC Team Award!  Don’t forget to register for races – lots missing from the U10 race!!! Only a couple hours left for Willard and Magic! Read on carefully – lots of info below!

3/2 results are here:

U12s at Middlebury

U10s at Okemo: Girls  and Boys – note that you have to click through to pages 2 and 3 using links at the bottom to view all results.

Important note: The U12 Tri-Council format has changed – the VARA Children’s Committee made a decision to change both the boys’ and girls’ races to a regular GS race – nothing will change about your athletes’ registrations.

This weekend:

***The Meisterschaft race series is a fun, two day series in Southern VT – however, you do not need to do both days!  We encourage all U12s to consider this since we are limited on training space at home due to hosting the U14 States. However, we will offer programming at home for any 12s who don’t want to race.***

U12 Willard Tall Gate SL Race Details – Sat 3/8:

Coaches (Mike, Nick, Bill, and Christie) will have bibs and tickets in the lodge between 8:15 and 8:30 – it’s small and should be easy to find them.  After getting their bib and ticket, athletes should meet coaches at 8:40 at bottom of lift ready to load the lift for inspection and warm up runs.  Race starts at 9:45 am.  Listen to coaches for timing on second run inspection and start time.  Awards will be about 30 minutes after the race at their race building at the bottom of the race trail.

You can see the whole race course on foot from the bottom, but parent tickets are available on adminskiracing or at registration.  I am not sure on price. Be aware no dogs are on the mountain or in the spectator area.  Also, I won’t venture to give directions, just GPS it, but know that it is about 1.5 hours away (and actually in NY!) and you will feel like you are lost driving through cow pastures, but then you will make a turn and there it is!  Willard is a nice, small mountain!

U12 Magic Dual GS Race Details – Sun 3/9:

Coaches (Nick, Ben R, Barrett, Jen, and Ryan) will have bibs in the lodge between 8 and 8:15 am – on the ground level (sort of the middle floor of the building – where the concessions are).  After getting bibs and tickets, athletes should meet outside of the Lodge at 8:25 am ready to load the lift for inspection and warm up runs.  Race starts at 9:30 am.  It is a dual GS (so two courses side-by-side running simultaneously) – every athlete will take one run on each course in the morning.  Then there will be a reset and then one run on each course in the afternoon.  Total of four runs.  Listen to coaches for info on timing and start order.  It will likely reverse for some of the runs!

The race is on Showcase which can be accessed by the red lift to the summit or the other one on looker’s left of it. Doesn’t look like they have parent tickets, but the finish is an easy hike – however you need to get a free uphill ticket to hike!!   Magic is closer than any other mountain we race at – over in Londonderry.  Use your GPS for the best route from your house!

U10 Pico GS Race Details – Sunday 3/9:

Pico is an easy and fun mountain for a race.  Use the Base Lodge to get ready and store your gear.  The Base Lodge is to the far right as you look up at the mountain.  We are not able to use the Pico Ski Club Building (far left near the race trail) or the Andrea Mead Lawrence Building (in the middle). The race is on A Slope which is serviced by a lift right next to it.  You don’t need to ski to view the race!

Athletes meet coaches inside of the Base Lodge on the ground floor to get their bibs and tickets between 8:10 and 8:20 am.   After getting their bib and ticket, athletes meet coaches at the bottom of the LPT lift (triple lift at the bottom of A and B Slope) at 8:30 am dressed and ready to go for inspection and warm up runs. No freeskiing on A Slope – only on B Slope or on Bushwhacker to Lower Pike.

First run starts at 10 am.  Second will immediately follow the first in reverse bib order (girls still go first).  If conditions allow the course will stay up for 30 minutes after the completion of the second run for fun, untimed runs. Awards will be 15 minutes after the third fun run ends.

Again, you can see the race on foot, but if you want to ski, parent tickets must be PRE-purchased on adminskiracing  HERE – $75 each; two per family.Pick up is in the Andrea Mead Lawrence Building (between the lodge and the ski club) BEFORE 8:30 am.  MUST pre-purchase.

Driving directions to get to Pico: Head north on Rt. 100 – make a right to stay on Rt. 100 just before Jackson Gore. Turn left on Rt. 4 and go past the Skyeship gondola for Killington and past the Killington access road. About 2 miles past that, you will see The Inn at Long Trail on your right – Pico will be on your left just down the hill. It takes about 35-45 minutes to get there. Beware of cops in Plymouth on Rt 100 when the speed limit drops!!

That’s all for now!  Have a great weekend!

Thanks!

Mariel
