Hello U10 and U12 Families,
It’s hard to believe the last weekend of the U12 and U10 Comp Center Program is upon us! Please see below for the weekend plans, including Memorial Race details, plus some OMS camp offerings this spring and summer!
Saturday 3/29: End of the Year Celebration!
We will not have formal training according to our usual time frame, but athletes and parents are invited to come over to Wardance between 9:30 and 11:30 am to run dual panel race courses which we will have set there. SL or GS skis – it doesn’t matter much…if your athlete has both and the GS skis are over about 160 cm they may prefer SL. No SL armor. If your athlete is going to the Memorial Race they should bring the ski they plan to race on (see below). Just fun and informal – athletes can run head to head against each other or mom, dad, aunt, uncle, etc! Then it will be Awards and Pizza Party – this has moved to the upstairs/mezzanine of The Base Lodge (which will be closed for us – enter from the downstairs slopeside stairs) due to some potentially inclement weather :(. Pizza will be out at about 11:30 am with awards at 12/12:15pm.
Sunday 3/30:
Tall Pole SL Training at Okemo (regular schedule) – athletes should have chin, shin, and pole guards on if they have them…if they don’t, no worries, they can ski around the gates without clearing them.ORKillington Memorial Race for U10 and U12s – there is a waitlist at this point and I’ve just received word that there are 58 on the list as of now. So I’d say there’s no room for extra adds and the prospects of getting in off the waitlist might be slim depending when you got on it…. Details for the race are below! OMS Spring SL Step Up Camp, April 2-4:
Okemo Mountain School is hosting a Spring SL Step Up Camp for any U10 – U14 athletes looking to get a jump on next season by adding in some extra days this spring. This is a great opportunity for second year U10s to get some time in tall slalom gates before moving up to U12s. Camp will run April 2 – 4 and it is possible to register for just a single day. Learn more and register HERE. Take advantage of the snow while it lasts!!
Also, looking ahead OMS will be hosting weekend fundamentals sessions at Killington from April 26- May 18. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more info!
Don’t forget to check out Okemo Mountain School’s Summer Camp Options too…sessions are filling quickly!
Three Maples Camp for ages 6-9
Summer Sports Adventure Camp for ages 10-16
Alpine On-Snow Camp in La Parva, Chile (U12 and U10s must travel with a family member)
Killington Memorial Race Details – Sunday 3/30:
– Registration is from 7:00 – 8:15 am in the Killington Ski Club Building (same place as for our regular season races). All athletes get their own bibs/tickets!
– We cannot use the Ski Club Building to get ready – must use the K1 Lodge and please use the bag check. Remember not to bring outside alcohol.
– Mike, Pete, Jen and I will be there coaching, as well as Jet and Rich with U14s, and we will meet the kids outside of the K1 Lodge at 8:15 AM to go for inspection. Athletes should be ready to ski and have their bib on.
– The race is technically a parallel, which has its own course setting specs of 10-20 meters. We’ve gotten word the course will be set at 15 meters, so if your athlete’s GS skis (that they normally ski on – don’t go dig up old ones!) are smaller than about 160 cm, those are probably the ticket, otherwise, they might want SL skis. There will be a red course and a blue course.
– Please wear a full shell helmet as you would for GS…this is required for parallel.
– First run starts at 9:45 am. Athletes take one run on the red/blue course and then come right back up for their second run on the opposite course in the same running order.
– Combined times from these two runs determine the first set of awards, and also who qualifies for the run-off. Stick around at the finish after the second run to see who is moving on!
– Each age class U8 (they are recognizing the 7 year olds separately)/U10/U12/U14 will have a true head-to-head run off. The winner of each age class/gender’s run off also gets an award. See the attached race announcement for more details on the format. Awards for both the AM two run race and the run off are at the conclusion of the run off.
– The race is on Lower Highline. You can watch it on foot very easily or purchase a parent ticket at registration for $120 – tickets are limited and available at registration.
Thanks!
Mariel
