U14 Camp/Training/Race Plan 1/31-2/2

Hello Athletes and Parents,

Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start! We are switching gear from SG back to the technical events with Vara GS Terrain Camp Friday, SL training Saturday, and Killington MVC SL Race Sunday. We saw many of you with personal best skiing on Sunday, which was really exciting! Remember training days are the time for making improvements in your skiing. Think intentional deliberate movements (deliberate practice). Race day is when we see what you have learned. Training is like studying for a test and race day is the test.

Friday 1/31 (Vara GS Terrain Camp)
For those that are able to attend, look forward to fun training in built terrain! Plan to meet at the A/B lift for bibs at 8:50am, we will load lifts at 9:00 and head to Wardance to inspect the elements. The tentative plan is to ski course set sections 9:15-11:30. Lunch 11:30-12:30. Afternoon full length run with timing and terrain 12:30-3:00. Day ends at 3:00pm. The program is attached if you would like more details.

Saturday 2/1 (SL Skis)
11:00am- Head up to the work road to meet coaches and start drills.
11:00am-1:00pm- Drills (listed below)- coaches will spread out and give feedback, please stop at them.
1:00pm-1:30pm- Water and snack break (reminder athletes should eat lunch before training starts). Bags can be left at the yurt for quick access. It is a good idea to bring water, a snack, and extra layers.
1:30pm-3:30pm- Ski Training Elements.
3:30pm- End training.

Focus:
-Start the turn on the rise line, release the turn on the drop line. In slalom most of the turn should be done by the time you are at the gate.
-Move to the new outside ski on the drop line, using a pole plant to release the edge and move into transition. Roll ankles to start the turn on the rise line.
-Good Hand and block position: Thumbs up, elbows down, arms in front of the body, move the wrist forward to block the gate (hit where the guard attaches to the pole), pole tip is angle forward and close to the snow, then plant.
-AS ALWAYS SKI OUTSIDE TO OUTSIDE SKI!!!

Drills:
-Run 1 Downhill ski garlands on the top pitch, outside ski carve turns SL radius to slightly bigger on flats
-Run 2 Downhill ski garlands on the top pitch, outside ski carve turns SL radius to slightly bigger on flats
-Run 3 J Turns
-Run 4 Outside ski carve turns the whole trail
-Run 5 Outside ski carve turns the whole trail
-Run 6 Inspection- then break

Training Elements:
-Stubby Picket Fence- This will be a challenge section. You must complete the stubbies with a pole plant on every turn. You will hike back up to try again until you complete the task. Everyone will move on and get to ski Gate sections, even if you are unable to complete the Picket Fence Challenge.
-Two SL gates sections, dye for tactics (rise line and drop line). Potential going through terrain in one section

Sunday 2/2 (MVC Killington SL Race)
Saturday Night after the Team Captains Meeting I will share our specific plan. At this point I don’t have much information, but when they send out a fact sheet I will put that out on Whatsapp. It is my understanding that everything will run out of Ram’s head and there is no need to go to K1 base area. They have a big Subaru WinterFest event going on in the K1 area. The race should be on Swirl, which is not visible from the base area. Killington usually offers a discounted parent ticket. I will get that info out when it is available.
