U12 and U10 Weekend Update 12/21 and 12/22 + Winter Break

Hi U12 and U10 Families,
I hope everyone was able to enjoy last weekend’s powder day!  I know that the kids that skied with us definitely did!!
Please read on for important information regarding training this weekend and during the holiday week.  Please also read U12.10 101 2013.14 Edition if you haven’t done so yet, which includes the U12 and U10’s race schedules, as well as important info on daily schedule and more.
Training will be according to our normal daily schedule each day with out normal meeting place and will be as follows:
Saturday 12/21: GS skis – we will freeski GS work on drills that carry stance and balance progress onto GS skis.  Groups that are ready for it will utilize some brush and stubby GS courses in the afternoon.  PARENT INFO MEETING 4:30 PM – see below!
Sunday 12/22: GS skis with the same plan as Saturday.
12/23 – 12/25: No training
Thursday12/26: GS skis – again a mix of freeskiing and maintaining proper stance and balance on GS skis.  Groups who are ready for it and/or racing in the End of the Year Open will work up to full gate GS training in the afternoon.
Friday12/27: GS freeskiing and drills all day – advancing the focus to turn initiation for those groups that are doing well with stance and balance.
Saturday 12/28  and Sunday 12/29: GS skis.  Full gate training for those athletes who are fundamentally ready for it and/or racing in the End of the Year Open.
Monday 12/30: End of the Year Open – details to come next week for those who are racing.  No training for those not racing – take the day to enjoy some freeskiing with your children or let them have a day off to rest – it is a long week of training.
Tuesday 12/31: SL skis (no armor) – we will work on introducing Skills Assessment skills.
U12/10 Informational Parent Meeting:  We will have a meeting for U12/10 parents specifically which will cover a lot of information and be an opportunity to ask any questions you might have.  This meeting will be held on December 21st at 4:30 pm in the Gold Room at Willie Dunne’s. There will be a cash bar (which likely will be CASH only) and a chance for mingle for a bit at 4:30 before getting down to the info portion around 4:45/5 pm.  We should be done by 5:45 pm at the latest. If you can make it great, if not, no need to let me know.
End of the Year Open:  There is an open GS race for U16, U14, and U12s at Okemo on December 30th.  You must enter your child yourself unlike the rest of the normal season races.  You can do so by clicking on the link to register on the following page: http://www.vara.org/race/end-of-year-open-gs/296/ and then signing in to adminskiracing.com.  This is a new system for registering.  You will need to create a profile there and then add your children as participants and THEN register them for the races.  Put OKEMO as their club to get the discounted entry rate for Okemo skiers.  Your child must be current with USSA and VARA to enter.  Please be aware that if your child is still a U10 (7, 8, or 9 years old by Dec 31) they are not eligible.  I also ask that you do not register your child if they are new to U12s (as in just moving up from Hopefuls or joining the program) – this race will be very intimidating for them and not a good intro to the year! The deadline for regular registration is December 20, 2013 at 12:00 pm (until the 27th for late registration) – the race will likely fill by then, so act quickly.  Racers who aren’t current with VARA will be kicked out of the race at the deadline – so get current!
Important Reminder on USSA and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12/10 must be a current USSA and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.  Both can be done online at ussa.org and vara.org, respectively.
Register your child for USSA as a youth non-scored competitor in the Eastern Division with Okemo Mountain as their club.  This can be done at www.ussa.org by clicking on the “My USSA” box at the top of the page and following the instructions that follow.  Note that you must actually pay for the membership, not just create a “My USSA” profile for your child.  Once the profile is created, you will be able to get the membership by clicking on “Register a New Member”.  You are not done if you haven’t paid money!
For VARA, on the home page under the “Members Tab” click “Renew/Join” and follow the instructions there.  You will be linking to a system called adminsports.com.  There you will create a profile and register members.
That’s all for now!!  Remember that the blog has a back log of all of my emails in case you are new to the list and have missed any!
See you this weekend!
