U12 and U10 Training Weekend of 12/13 and 12/14

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

I hope you and your athletes all enjoyed last weekend and much as myself and the coaches did!  We were all very excited to be back on snow and to see them all skiing so well!

This weekend we will continue to freeski and work on stance and balance drills.  We will be on SL skis on Saturday and GS skis on Sunday.  The following weekend we will also be on GS skis and will begin to incorporate some stubby and brush gate work for those athletes who are ready or racing in the End of the Year Open.

Read on for a few important reminders and some info about upcoming events.  Also remember to check out the attachment for lots of helpful info and race schedules if you haven’t already.

Remember that this and every email is posted on the U12/10 Blog on the OMARA website:

1) Typical Daily Training Schedule: U12 and U10s meet on both Saturday and Sundays. We train from 8:30-10:30 am and then again from 12-2 pm. We meet at the top of the AB Quad at both 8:30 am and 12 pm. The children are dismissed at the end of each session from wherever they happen to be at the time – we do not reconvene at a central place at the end of each session. Please plan accordingly with your child.

2) Winter Break Schedule: We will train during winter break. December 20 and 21 are a normal weekend.  The days for winter break training are as follows: December 26-29 and December 31. We may also have a fun activity on January 2nd for those who are still around.  Regular weekend training picks back up on January 3.  We will train according to our normal daily schedule during this time, unless I tell you otherwise. If your child can’t make it every day, it is not a big deal – I know many of you work and can’t be here the whole time, that school breaks differ, and that you have holiday obligations.

3) End of the Year Open: There is an open GS race for U16, U14, and U12s at Okemo on December 30th. You must enter your child yourself unlike the rest of the normal season races. You can do so by clicking on the link to register on the following page: http://www.vara.org/race/end-of-year-open-u12-14-16/603/ and then signing in to adminskiracing.com.  You need to create a profile there (or sign into an existing one) and then add your children as participants and THEN register them for the races.  Put OKEMO as their club to get the discounted entry rate for Okemo skiers.  Your child must be current with USSA and VARA to enter. Please be aware that if your child is still a U10 (7, 8, or 9 years old by Dec 31) they are not eligible. I also ask that you do not register your child if they are new to U12s (as in just moving up from Hopefuls or joining the program) – this race will be very intimidating for them and not a good intro to the year!  The race fills fast, so act quickly. Racers who aren’t current with VARA will be kicked out of the race at the deadline – so get current!

4) Important Reminder on USSA and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12/10 must be a current USSA and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.  Both can be done online at ussa.org and vara.org, respectively.

Register your child for USSA as a youth non-scored competitor in the Eastern Division with Okemo Mountain as their club.  This can be done at www.ussa.org by clicking on the “My USSA” box at the top of the page and following the instructions that follow.  Note that you must actually pay for the membership, not just create a “My USSA” profile for your child.  Once the profile is created, you will be able to get the membership by clicking on “Register a New Member”.  You are not done if you haven’t paid money!

For VARA, on the home page under the “Members Tab” click “Renew/Join” and follow the instructions there.  You will be linking to a system called adminsports.com.  There you will create a profile (or sign into one you already have) and register members.

5) U12 and U10 Informational Parent Meeting: We will have a meeting for U12 and U10 parents specifically which will cover a lot of information and be an opportunity to ask any questions you might have.  This meeting will be held on December 20th at 5:00 pm at Willie Dunne’s.  There will be a cash bar and a chance to mingle with other parents at the beginning.  Then there will be an informational meeting where you can ask questions about the upcoming season – most of what is covered is in the attachment. You will also hear more about the importance of fundamentals and have the chance to meet Chris Hurka, the new OMS and Okemo Alpine Program Director. If you can make it great, if not, no need to let me know.

6) The 5th Annual Okemo Mountain School Board of Directors’ Reception is this Saturday, December 13th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Okemo Mountain School (53 Main Street). So if you are interested in learning a little about OMS, meeting the Board, and having some drinks and hors d’oeuvres come on out! Hopefully, you all received the invite I sent, but either way you are all invited! There are no tickets to purchase, admission fee, or need to RSVP.

That’s all for now!! Remember that the blog has a back log of all of my emails in case you are new to the list and have missed any! Just click here.

See you Saturday!

Thanks,

Mariel
