2017 VARA World Cup Parade – Response needed by 10/13

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Hello Okemo Competition Center Alpine Families plus a few recent alpine alumni!),

It is hard to believe it is already October!  I hope all is well!  Many of you are probably wondering about registration for the Okemo Competition Center programs this winter.  You should be hearing from Peter Cornish, Director of the Okemo Competition Center, very soon regarding sign-ups for this winter.  I know that you are able to call the Okemo Call Center (802-228-1600) right now to register (see info on programs and rates HERE), but soon you may also be able to register online as well. Peter has been working with IT on making this convenience available.   However, I am contacting you right now regarding the VARA Parade of Athletes at the World Cup in November.
As many of you know, Killington will again host the Women’s World Cup the weekend of November 25th and 26th.  It was amazing to see World Cup racing back in the East last winter and we are all very excited to have it back again!
On Saturday 11/25 VARA clubs are again being invited to participate in a Parade of Clubs prior to the start of the GS race.  We hope to have a strong contingent of Okemo participants like we did last year!  We had over 100 march in the parade, which was the most of any club!
Read on for details, but be sure to complete this SURVEY if your athlete wants to get a spot in the parade.
Details are still being finalized by VARA and the WC Organizing Committee, but here is what we know as of now:
1) We will be able to have a certain number of athletes march in the parade.  Hopefully, this number will accommodate all that wish to march, but our number could wind up being somewhat limited.  Your response now will help ensure all can march!
2) Okemo is going to generously provide busing again this year and our buses will be able to drive all the way to the K1 Lodge for drop-off/pick-up.  HOWEVER, every athlete will need to be accompanied by an adult to ride the bus and this adult will be responsible for this/these athlete(s) during the course of the day at Killington.  Coaches will serve as chaperones only during the staging of and marching in the actual parade and will be watching the race from the VARA viewing area where the parade will end.  Your athletes are encouraged to watch the race with their coaches so that they can ask questions, etc, BUT coaches will not be responsible for supervising athletes during the race or making sure they they get back on the bus at the end of the day.  Last year proved too logistically difficult with so many different families having different plans for their athletes and last minute changes to those plans.  With such large crowds present at the event, we feel the best way to ensure athlete safety is to have each family responsible.  Depending on response for taking the bus we may need to limit athletes to one parent on the bus with them.
3) Any athlete who wants to march in the parade but NOT ride the bus is welcome to march.  The athlete will need to meet the group at the staging area near the K1 lodge.
4) Approximate timeline for Saturday 11/25. Note this may change prior to the event and details regarding meeting places will come!
6 AM – meet at Okemo for bus transport (athletes must have an adult!)
7:30 AM – meet at the staging area for the parade.  Athletes are left with coach chaperones.
8:30/8:45 AM – Parade begins
9 AM – Parade ends at VARA viewing area.  Athletes reconnect with their parents/adult chaperone in/just outside the VARA viewing area.
9:30/10 AM – race starts
2 PM – approx. race end
3:30 PM – approx time for bus departure back to Okemo.
Since we need to provide a number of athlete parade participants to VARA this weekend, I am asking that you click this link (https://goo.gl/forms/DkiBJqRN1Kq4UOgU2) to fill out a survey to indicate your athletes’ participation BY FRIDAY 10/13.  Please consider this a firm RSVP.  We also will need to work with Okemo to try and meet the demand for bus rides, so please reply accurately there too.  Both transportation and parade participation may be limited, and I may need to collect another set of responses later.  If you are interested in learning more about the parade, please make sure to fill out the survey, even if your response is NO.
Thanks!
Mariel

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

Dear Friends of Okemo Mountain School,

I wanted to take a moment to invite you all to the Sixth Annual Okemo Mountain School Winter Festival onSaturday, February 13th, 2016 from 7 – 10 pm at Willie Dunn’s at the Okemo Valley Golf Club. There will be a great sampling of wines and beers, as well as hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants.  We will have great silent auction items up for grabs and, new this year, the DJ will be playing dancing music to add to the fun!
It is a casual evening meant for mingling with friends, old and new, and enjoying great food and drink. Tickets are $20 in advance (available at OMS, Okemo Guest Services and Administration, and the Wine and Cheese Depot) or $25 at the door and include the wine and beer tasting.   We will also have wine and beer available for purchase.  Bring a friend (or ten!). This event is most appropriate for adults only. Hope to see you all there!
Also, please consider further supporting OMS through our accompanying Winter Festival Fundraising Campaign. See the attached donation form for more details and contact me if you have any questions. You can also click here to donate ONLINE.  Okemo Mountain School is a 501(c)3 and donations are tax deductible.  A donation in any amount is greatly appreciated and makes a great impact!
I hope to see you all on February 13th!
With warm regards,
Mariel

Important Information / Action Required – Proxies and Annual Meeting

Wednesday, January 13th, 2016

PLEASE READ!  WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE.

Over the coming days, please check your mailbox for an important mailing from OMARA.  The mailing includes materials that require a response from all 2014-2015 OMARA members – regardless of your current status with the program.

For the past several months, OMARA’s Board of Directors has been working with outside counsel to complete a much-needed update of the entity’s governing documents.

However, your personal involvement is critical, because our current  governing documents require a 2/3 vote by all 2014-2015 OMARA members in support of the new documents.

Copies of the Annual Meeting Notice, proposed new  By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation are enclosed in the mailing.  Please contact me, our secretary Lisa Sherman, or any other board member, to discuss any questions you may have.  We will also schedule a conference call for anyone interested in discussing the importance of these changes. The updates will streamline and modernize our rules,  improve governance and promote flexibility to address the needs of our members.

Whether or not you plan to attend the Feb 14th Annual Meeting at Willie Dunn’s please complete and return the Proxy in the self addressed, postage-paid envelope that is included with the mailing.

Our collection of proxies will ensure that we have a quorum at the meeting, enabling us to proceed with the vote.  If you decide to attend, we can easily return your proxy at time of check-in if you desire to cast your own ballot. If you cannot attend but wish to cast your own vote in lieu of a proxy, please contact me at the number listed, below, or Lisa Sherman at 508-255-2133, ext. 247.

Happy New Year ! Competition Programs Update as of Thursday, 12/31

Thursday, December 31st, 2015

Greetings and Happy New Year !

Thanks to everyone for the flexibility in managing through a most unusual start to winter.  Truly, collaboration between Okemo Mountain, our comp center director, coaches, parents and athletes has gone a long way in making the best of a difficult season.

With limited terrain during a holiday week, the slopes were destined to become congested. As competition teams move together in groups — often at speed — they can easily intimidate other guests and bring on other logistical issues.   Under these circumstances, other mountains could have easily shut down competition access in entirety.  Meanwhile, Okemo has been extremely responsive to accomodate our needs; offering some early (pre-opening) lift access, restricting terrain for exclusive competition use and when viable, diverting snowmaking to competition-specific terrain.  In good times and through challenges, they’ve given full support to our programs.  (See the plan from Okemo’s GM, Bruce Schmidt, for valuable insights.)  And when you have a chance, pass along a simple thank you to anyone on the mountain ops or snowmaking team — those words will be well received.

With colder temps again in the forecast, we are optimistic that more favorable conditions will soon be in store.   Competition programs will now be reverting to traditional training schedules and times.  Check in with your coaches and their individual blog posts for more detail.  Also, please continue to check this website frequently for ongoing updates.

For New Year’s Eve, offer up a toast to snowier days.  Again, this winter may have been delayed, but we will not be denied.

See you on the slopes,

Bill Hauser
