Hopefuls Weekend of 2/19 and Vacation Week

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Hopefuls training for the upcoming vacation week is as follows: 2/19, 2/22 (race day), 2/24 and 2/26. We will meet each day on our usual schedule. This week is a great time for the kids to ski with their groups, ski with their parents and connect with other children they have met in the program.

Another event on the schedule this coming week is the Okemo Mountain School Winter Festival this Saturday (2/19) evening from 7-10 pm at the Main Base Lodge.  Come catch up with old friends and meet new ones! There will be wine and beer tasting, food from local restaurants, and a silent auction.  It is a great way to support OMS and OMARA and have fun at the same time!  Entry is $20 and the event is adults only.

See you all on the hill this weekend.

The Hopefuls will be racing this Saturday 2/5. As always, we will meet at the Sugar House at 9 am, ski over to the Nastar trail, inspect and start racing at 10 am. Each athlete will take two runs in the course and the race should take about an hour. After the race, we’ll break for lunch, then meet again at noon for freeskiing until 2 pm. Hopefuls training 1/15

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Great race last weekend for everyone. Thanks to all the parents, siblings and friends who lined the course to cheer on our Hopeful racers. It was a very impressive crowd! We got a foot + of snow today so the skiing this weekend should be fantastic. Perhaps even a bit of woods skiing will be in order. The jacket order has been placed, we may have an update this weekend as to a delivery day for our new duds. As usual, we’ll meet our groups at 9 am in front of the Sugar House, return at 11 am then regroup at noon and ski until 2 pm. See you Saturday.

HOPEFUL RACE WEEKEND 1/8

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

It looks like our race is a go for this Saturday. Okemo has been madly making snow on the NASTAR trail this week. We will meet as usual, at 9 am at the Sugar House. The teams will then head to the NASTAR trail (directly under the Black Ridge Chair) where the kids will inspect both courses. The race should start around 10 am, we’d love to have lots of parents there cheering the athletes on. Hopeful Races are a dual format, so each racer will take a timed run in both courses. Once both runs have been completed the athlete is free to go to lunch. The races usually take about an hour from start to finish. After lunch we’ll meet again at noon, ski until 2 pm, regroup at the Sugar House where we will announce the results of the race. There are many new Hopefuls who have never been in a race course before so it should be an exciting day for all.

Also, Coaches Ellen and Leigh will be taking orders for the Hopeful team jackets (different from the OMARA jackets) during the day on Saturday for those who are interested in purchasing one. Please see the previous post for a photo and description of the jackets.

See you all on Saturday, and e-mail us if you have any questions.

Hopeful Jackets

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Here is the latest information on the jackets (pictured above)

As announced at the Thursday meeting last week, all Hopefuls racers now have the opportunity to purchase a team jacket.   The turnaround time is quick- orders will be taken this coming Saturday (and only this Saturday) and must be accompanied by payment in check form. Details follow:
  1. The coats will be an electric blue microfiber quilted ski jacket with a dark purple hood. The inside will be a bright green ripstock fabric.   The back will be stitched with the words:  OKEMO MOUNTAIN RACING (in large letters).  The front stitching will state:  Hopeful Race Team over the OMARA logo.  We have attached a photograph provided by Lori Ford (who is creating the team jacket) which shows the electric blue and green coloring.
  2. In order to receive jackets as quickly as possible, we are both taking and placing orders next Saturday.  We cannot personalize the stitching. The cost per jacket comes to $95/each.
  3. This means that if you want to order a jacket (or jackets)- you will need to come to the Hopeful Race with a check made out to Lori Ford (total amount of check will vary based on number of coats!)
  4. Please think about size.  We will be able order kids (s-m-l-xl) and adult (xs,-s-m-l-xl).  We will try to bring some sample sizes on Saturday- but cannot promise.  To give you a sense of sizing, Ellen Leigh or Pam would wear an adult small.  Ellen’s 12 year old daughter would wear a children’s large (size 14/16).  If in doubt, order one size larger so kids can wear layers.
  5. In order to place the order and receive the coats back asap, we will not be able to accommodate orders after next Saturday.  Nor will we be able to place your order without a check for Lori.
Please do not feel any pressure to buy coats. This is not a fundraiser for Omara. Neither Okemo, nor Omara nor the race department receive any of the money.  Our only role is to broker the order to meet a perceived need.  So many kids have seen other racers (Devos, Council, etc) wearing team colors- we want to offer Hopeful racers the same opportunity.
Thanks!

Hopeful Jackets, Rosters and More….

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Three of the team rosters have been posted, I will post the last two when I receive them later this week. If your name is missing from your team list please let me know. We have a great group of kids and we are looking forward to our first race on Saturday. Stay tuned for details, hopefully, we should have enough snowmaking to get the NASTAR trail going.

HOPEFUL JACKET INFORMATION – Ellen and Leigh have offered to coordinate, order and distribute Hopeful team jackets this year. Following is the information related to ordering the jackets.

As announced at the thursday meeting, we are offering a hopeful team jacket this year. The coats will be a teal microfiber quilted ski jacket with a dark purple hood, this is a great jacket for layering.  The back will be stitched with the words:  OKEMO MOUNTAIN RACING (in large letters).  The front stitching will state:  Hopeful Race Team over the OMARA logo.
Lori Ford, an OMARA mother and business woman, will be making the coats. She makes all kinds of custom clothing for ski clubs, sports teams and groups all over the country.  The cost is $95.  We cannot personalize the stitching. In order to receive jackets as quickly as possible, we are both taking and placing orders next saturday. This means that if you want to order a jacket (or jackets)- you will need to come to the Hopeful Race with a check made out to Lori Ford (amount based on number of coats!) Please think about size.  We will be able order kids (s-m-l-xl) and adult (s-m-l-xl).   We are hoping to have sample sizes with us on saturday for you to try on.
Finally, in order to place the order and receive the coats back asap, we will not be able to accommodate requests after Saturday 1/8.  Nor will we be able to place your order without a check for Lori. Ellen and Leigh will be available on Saturday to take your orders. Please do not feel any pressure to buy coats. This is not a fundraiser for Omara and we do not make any money off of them. We are just doing this to accommodate requests over the  years- as our hopefuls see the team jackets worn by Devos and Council.
