Hello All,

Wow, what a wonderful Devo Finals for Okemo! We are all so proud of all of our athletes for their performance last Sunday! A huge thank you to all of the parents that pitched in to make the race a success, to the coaches who went above and beyond, to Eric Evans for his help (this weekend and ALWAYS:)!), and, of course, to Okemo for supporting us in holding the race at the last minute!

I will be working up a masterpiece of a race re-cap in the next week or so, but wanted to get this info to you ASAP!

As you all probably know from Peter Cornish’s email, the End of the Year awards have been moved up to SATURDAY, March 24th at 11 am at the bottom of Wardance. Please plan to attend!

We have decided to, unfortunately, cancel Devo Olympics. Therefore, there will be no training or gathering of Devos other than awards on Saturday. Please take the day to enjoy some of the last turns of the season with your children and then attend the awards. We will not have any training on Sunday.

Hope to see you all out there this weekend!

Thanks,

Hello All,

I hope you are all enjoying the week. Fun weekend ahead for the Devos! Both teams head to Middlebury on Saturday and then are home training on Sunday with a race ski demo for the kids!! Details for both days follow….

Info for Middlebury GS Race on Saturday, March 10th:

Both Okemo 1 and Okemo 2 head to Middlebury on Saturday. The base lodge doesn’t even open until 7:30 am and they don’t like people to arrive early, so aim for a 7:35/7:45am arrival. Registration is in the main base lodge beginning at 7:30 am. Entry fee is $30. Please bring a check made payable to Middlebury Ski Club or cash.

Have the kids put their bibs on immediately and attach lift tickets to their goggles! They will not be able to ride the lift without their lift ticket, so do not put it on jacket or pants.

We will meet the kids outside of the base lodge to go for free runs and course inspection at 8:30 am. The first run doesn’t start until 10 AM and the second run will start almost immediately after the first.

Directions: Take 100 North like you are going to Killington. Watch for cops in Plymouth. Take a left at RT 4. Watch for cops on the flats just past the Skyeship gondola. Just past the access road to Killington Rt. 100 splits off to the right. Take this right to stay on Rt. 100. You will go through the town of Pittsfield and after another 5 miles or so you will come to a fork in the road. Stay to the Left (almost actually a left hand turn) to stay on Rt. 100. Follow this for another 10-12 miles or so and you will come to the town of Hancock. Take a left onto Rt 125. This will take you all of the way to the Middlebury Snowbowl. It will be on your left after climbing up a big hill on a windy road. The trip takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and fifteen minutes from Ludlow. Keep in mind that the Snow Bowl is technically in Hancock, not in Middlebury and so you don’t go there like you would go to the town of Middlebury or the college. I have not driven these roads since the flooding this fall and I know the areas you will drive through were hit hard – all roads are open but please be aware you may encounter temporary bridges and such.

Sunday Training: We will train GS at home on Sunday according to our regular schedule. However, there will be the opportunity for your children to test some of next year’s race skis as well during our afternoon gate session on Wardance! This means that they may want to bring SL armor if they want to test SL skis (we will set a short SL course for ski testing in addition to our GS training course). Nordica will be bringing skis, as well as possibly a few other manufacturers as well.

Looking ahead…Quechee is still planning on hosting the Devo Finals on Saturday, March 17th. If anything should change I will let you all know ASAP!

That’s all for now! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,

Mariel

Hello All,

Well, we finally are getting snow!! It has been snowing since yesterday and it’s still coming down!

Great weekend last weekend – very proud of all of our racers for some great performances at Suicide Six! See below for a fun race re-cap!

This weekend will be an easy one – training at home both days. We will train GS on Saturday and have a return to SL on Sunday – both regular days schedule-wise. We may set some full gate SL, so if your children have armor (shin guards, chin guards, and pole guards) they can wear it, but don’t need to have it.

Looking ahead, both teams go to Middlebury for a GS on Saturday, March 10th and to Quechee on March 17th for the Finals which are also a GS. There is no qualification for Finals. The End of the Year Awards and Kid vs. Parent race will most likely be on the 24th and then that will be it for the season – hard to believe!

Suicide Six Re-Cap:

What an all around awesome day last Sunday at Suicide Six! Not only was it bright and sunny, but the kids skied so well!! Okemo 2 also was victorious again in bringing home the boot!

J6 Girls: Katie Killian was once again the leader in this group. Beating out the second place finisher by over two seconds, Katie took the gold and was the fastest girl of the day! Erin Kelleher had an excellent first run to bring home the 5th place medal. And just behind Erin (only 8 hundredths!) was Isabelle Gerrard who came back from a crash first run to take sixth on her second run! All of the J6 girls won a medal – way to go girls!!

J6 Boys: Drew Visnic led this incredibly strong pack of boys. Not only did Drew win both runs, but he beat his first run with his second run, and brought home the Gold! Just behind Drew was Joey Belenardo with the Silver and then Brennan Hynes with the Bronze. Way to sweep the podium J6 boys! But the medal winning didn’t stop there! John Kelleher put down two solid runs and won the 5th place medal. Only 7 hundredths behind John, Charlie Beney took home the 6th place medal. And just behind Charlie was Freddie Brogden in 7th. Like the girls, all J6 boys won a medal – excellent job boys!

J5 Girls: Incredible competition in the J5 girls category on Sunday with an almost full Okemo sweep of the top 10 by this fast moving group of girls. Emma Austin absolutely attacked the course and threw down a smokin’ fast 25.59 to win the gold! Riiiiight on her heels though was Siofra Murdoch who took the silver with a 25.60 – yup, that’s only 1 hundredth of a difference. What made us just as proud of them as their skiing, was the big hug they gave eachother up on the podium! Jillian Mirabile continued the podium sweep with another hot time of 25.72 to win the bronze. Margaret Rabbitt had a great first run to win fourth. Connie Brogden was on her heels in 5th followed closely by Emma Laurion in 6th. Lizzie DeGraw threw down a great second run – one of the few to beat their first run – to win 8th. Caroline Mohan and Emma Nelson also brought home hardware in 9th and 10th respectively. Cameron Calcano finished just 5 hundredths out of the medals in 11th. Honor Brogden was having an awesome first run and then had to pull out of the course to avoid the racer in front of her who she was about to overtake. Unfortunately, she fell in pulling out. Despite a sore arm, she took her re-run, which earned her a 15th place – pretty awesome considering that the sore arm turned out to have a small fracture! Hope you are feeling better Honor!! Brooke Moran finished 16th and Emilie Waters 19th. Also following up to a fall on her first run, Alex Hoffman placed 21st (actually tied for 21st!). Lucy Howland placed 23rd, Michaela King 24th, and Emma MacDonald 28th. Nice work girls!

J5 Boys: Another awesome Okemo showing in this age group! Connor Visnic had an awesome day! Connor won Silver with two very strong runs. Connor Hawkins also had a great day! He came back from a fall first run to win Bronze with his second run. Coel Lovejoy won the sixth place medal and Nick Ambeliotis also snagged a medal in 8th. Jack Riordan finished just outside of the medals in 11th. Patrick Young beat his first run time with his second to finish 15th. Just behind him was Adam Bradford in 16th. Douglas Beney placed 20th, Tommy Weisenberg 21st, and Sean Feingold 24th. Way to go J5 boys!

J4 Girls: Paige Ludl led the pack of J4 girls winning Gold. Clara Everett beat her first run time with her second to win the Silver only 0.08 behind Paige! Lexie Why (in her first Devo race!) placed thrid to bring home the Bronze! Maddie Young won the fourth place medal. Chloe Dawkins came back from a fall first run to place 6th. The to round out the top 10, Jaimie Bell placed 8th, Foley Rabbit 9th, and Charlotte Young 10th. Just out of the medals were Avery Phillips, Hannah Powers, and Clare Mohan in 12th, 14th, and 15th respectively. Good work girls!

J4 Boys: The J4 boys were a tough group with some great competition! With an exceptional second run, beating his first by almost a second, Conor Murdoch won gold for J4 boys. Peter Hoffman sied fast to bring home the Silver and Jack Shea, coming back from a fall and BIG hike first run, was right behind him with the bronze. Another excellent Okemo podium sweep! Jonah Tobin took home the 4th place medal. Kyle Stuart and Ries Faller were separated only by hundredths finishing 6th and 7th repsectively. Camden Filoon also snagged a medal in 10th. Just out of the medals were Spencer Tretter, TJ Pavone, and Jack Feingold finishing 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively.

Great job Okemo 1 and 2!!

That’s all for now…

Thanks,

Hello All,

Great weekend – and week so far! Tomorrow is a day off and just a quick reminder that if your child is tired (especially if they were at Valentine Camp last week), they should take an extra day off between now and Sunday’s race!

This weekend Saturday will be GS training at home according to our normal schedule. Sunday both teams head to Suicide Six for a GS race. Read on for details and for a fun Quechee race re-cap!

However, I quickly wanted to thank everyone that attended last weekend’s OMS Winter Festival – it was a huge success raising over $32,000 for the school! Also, if you are looking for something fun to do this Saturday – don’t forget the 10th Annual Comedy Night featuring Rusty DeWees ”the Logger” in the Clock Tower Base Lodge – doors open at 7 pm and the show begins at 8 pm. Tickets to the event are $25 in advance and $28 at the door. You can buy tickets from me at OMS or on the hill and they can also be purchased at the Wine and Cheese Depot, VT Properties, Peoples Bank in Ludlow, and Jackson Gore. The Logger is very funny and all proceeds benefit the OMS Scholarship Fund and Black River High School’s Class of 2012 Project Graduation!

Suicide Six:
Both teams will be going to Suicide Six this Sunday, February 26th. Suicide Six, if you haven’t been there, is a very small mountain. The race can be viewed on foot from the finish area which is right by the base lodge. Registration is from 7:30 – 8:30 amand is in the Ski Runner Club building which is to the right, beyond the lift, as you walk towards the base lodge. The entry fee is $30 – cash or checks made payable to WSR (NO credit cards). You are best off dropping everything in the base lodge and then walking over to the registration. ALL SKIS MUST BE PUT IN THE SKI RACKS or the ski patrol will take them!!! Please remind your children of this.

We will meet the kids at the base of the main lift at 8:15 am to go for a few free runs and inspections. No parents on the course during inspection.

The first run is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am with the second run beginning almost immediately after the conclusion of the first. The free-ski program will gather by the lift right after the end of the second run and awards will be about 45 minutes after the completion of the second run in front of the ski club building.

Parent tickets were available at the ticket window for $46 LAST YEAR – I am not sure if it is the same this eyar. Again, you do not need to ski to view the race! They ask that spectators walk up on skier’s left (closer to the lift). No dogs are allowed on the hill.

Directions: From Ludlow, head towards Jackson Gore, but just before it turn right onto RT 100 N. When you enter Plymouth, turn right onto Rt. 100A. When this dead ends at RT 4, take a right. Watch for cops when the speed limit drops in Bridgewater! Continue until you enter Woodstock. Just past the green, take a left onto RT 12. You will go over a little bridge and then bear right. After a mile or so, you will come to a fork in the road. Go right at the fork. (there are signs for Suicide Six at this point) Go another few miles and you will come to Suicide Six on the left hand side. OBEY SPEED LIMITS EVERYWHERE – the cops are bad along this whole route, esp. in and around Woodstock.

It takes about 45 minutes to get there.

Quechee Race Re-cap!

Despite being a VERY long day, the Stubby SL race was a great race for Okemo and overall very fun! Okemo 2 was able to re-claim the BOOT!! Congrats Okemo 2!!! Let’s hang on to it for the rest of the season!

J6 Girls: Katie Killian led this group of small but speedy skiers! Katie had a smoking fast second run – in fact the second fastest second run of any girl regardless of age class – to claim the gold and beat out the competition by 5 seconds! Also skiing very fast, and having the exact SAME time on her first and second run (how’s that for consistency??) was Isabelle Gerrard who brought home the 5th place medal. Erin Kelleher beat her first run time by over 3 seconds in her second run (awesome!) to claim the 9th place medal. Just out of the medals was Maeve Schoudel in 15th and Sophie Brett in 22nd. Nice work girls!

J6 Boys: Another crew that’s short on height, but not on speed, the J6 boys were impressive! Drew Visnic came back from a crash on his first run to win bronze with a great second run time. Joey Belenardo was right on his heels (only 0.13 seconds back) in 5th place. John Kelleher also snagged a medal, placing 8th. Just out of the medals were Freddie Brogden in 11th (2.5 seconds faster second run!!), Brennan Hynes in 13th (also over 1 second faster his second run – what if we gave these boys a 3rd run ?!?) and Charlie Beney in 17th.

J5 Girls: The J5 girls was a very competitive category with lots of racers! Siofra Murdoch led the pack and in fact threw down the fastest girls time of the day in her first run (and in her second run) to take home the gold by over 2.5 seconds. In fact, Siofra was only outdone by one J4 boy! Way to girl ‘em Siofra! But watch out for Emma Austin and Emma Laurion! Only 0.09 separated these two with Emma Austin taking 4th and Emma Laurion 5th. Connie Brogden was right on their heels in 6th and Jillian Mirabile grabbed the 8th place medal! Just out of the medals were Honor Brogden in 12th and Margaret Rabbit in 13th. Cameron Calcano placed 17th, Lizzie Degraw 19th, Brooke Moran 27th, Emilie Waters 37th, Emma O’Shea 38th, Emma MacDonald 39th, Lucy Howland 42nd, Gracie Childs 45th, and Emma Nelson 47th. Way to have a great showing in a tough field girls!

J5 Boys: Another very competitive age class here! Jay Schoudel led the charge for Okemo with a 5th place finish. Connor Visnic was right behind him in 6th. Just out of the medals was Cole Lovejoy in 12th. Nick Ambeliotis placed 18th, Conor Hawkins 23rd, Patrick Young 27th, Douglas Beney 28th, Adam Bradford 31st, Sean Feingold 32nd, and Tommy Weisenberg 33rd. Nice work boys!

J4 Girls: Carly Schoudel was the star of the J4 girls at the stubby SL. Carly had the second fastest girls’ time of the day to win GOLD! Chloe Dwakins won the 6th place medal and Maddie Young the 8th place medal. Hannah Powers snagged the 10th place medal with Foley Rabbit, Charlotte Young, and Clare Mohan finishing just out of the medals in 12th, 15th, and 16th respectively.

J4 Boys: The J4 boys had a VERY strong showing at Quechee. Ries Faller led the charge with a 2nd place finish to bring home silver. Camden Filoon won the bronze – despite being sick! Conor Murdoch continued the sweep in 4th, followed by Jack Shea in 5th, Jonah Tobin in 6th, Peter Hoffman in 7th, and Kyle Stuart in 8th. Way to bring home the hardware! Jack Feingold and Spencer Tretter finished just out of the medals in 11th and 15th respectively. Nice work J4 boys!

That’s all for now!!

Thanks,

Hello All,

GREAT weekend this past weekend! Okemo 2 was able to re-claim the boot with Okemo 1 right on their heels! We were very proud of all of the kids for their individual performances!

We are now moving into a long set of GS training in preparation for our next race, which will be a GS at Suicide Six on Sunday, February 26th. I will send all pertinent details out for that race at the end of next week.

As for this weekend and the upcoming week of President’s week, we will be training at home according to our normal schedule: 8:30-10:30 am/12 – 2 pm. Meeting at the top of the AB Quad am and pm.

We will train Saturday – Tuesday (2/18 – 2/21), take Wednesday OFF, train Thursday – Saturday (2/23 – 2/5), and race on Sunday 2/26. GS skis each day, please! We completely understand if your child is not here during the week next week – we know some schools don’t have a vacation and some parents cannot take off work – so no worries. Also be sure to have your child take an extra day off if they need it – we do not want to go into Sunday exhausted!!!

On another note, please remember there are two fun events (for parents !) coming up on the next two Saturdays!

This coming Saturday, February 18th from 7-10 pm in the Main Base Lodge is the OMS Winter Festival, which is a huge fundraiser for the school. Please see the invitation on the omara homepage - it is a very fun evening of wine and cheese tasting and anyone is welcome, so please bring friends! There also is a great Silent Auction with items such as an African Safari up for bid! I will have tickets on Saturday on the hill if you want to track me down!

Also, on Saturday 2/24 is the 10th annual Comedy Night hosted by Vermont Properties from which OMS will recieve half of the proceeds. “The Logger” will be the comedian and he is very funny! I will also have those tickets on me over the next week or so if you want to snag some in advance – this show does sell out every year!!

That’s all for now!

Thanks,

Hello All,

Great weekend of training and racing last weekend! Unfortunately, Okemo 2 was unable to recover the boot from Killington! No worries – there is always this weekend! I’d have a race re-cap for you, but the VARA website has been down all morning and I can’t get the results! Please read on carefully for information regarding the SL camp on Friday and the race at Quechee.

Saturday: Both teams go to Quechee for the Stubby SL – see info below!

Sunday: Both teams will be training at home. GS skis please.

Looking ahead, we will have training during President’s week (week of Feb 20th) for those who are around. We completely understand if your work schedule doesn’t allow you to be here with your child. Not a big deal! We will likely train Monday, Tuesday, have Wednesday off, and then train Thursday, Friday before heading into the regular weekend. The day off will be determined ultimately by the weather though, so stay tuned. Also, if you child gets tired during the week, please give them an extra day off.

OMS Valentine Camp is completely full and info will be coming to those attending in a separate email.

Friday Slalom Camp At Quechee: For those attending the Stubby Slalom Camp at Quechee on Friday, February 10th, here are the details. Please plan to arrive at Quechee just before 8 AM. Registration for the camp (which will proceed similarly to registration for a race) is in the downstairs of the base lodge beginning at 8 AM. Entry is $30 and includes a lift ticket. The children should be ready to ski and meet outside of the base lodge at 8:30 am. Al, Christie, and I will be there, but they will likely be skiing with other coaches from other mountains. They will be with the camp for the remainder of the day. They need to bring a lunch or buy one from the cafeteria. There is an ice cream social at 2:30 pm and then the kids are free to go for the day. See directions to Quechee in the race info below.

Stubby SL race for both teams at Quechee on Saturday, February 11th:

Registration is in the basement of the Quechee base lodge from 7:30-8:30 am. The entry fee for the race is $30. You will get your child’s lift ticket and bib here – keep the reminders coming about not losing bibs! Parent tickets are $22 and sibling tickets are $18. This will be a big race as all Mid-VT teams will be there.

We will meet the kids at 8:25 am at the base of the lift to go for free runs and inspection.

The first run starts at 9:45 am and the second run will start about 5 minutes after the completion of the first. This is a small venue and the race trail is visible from the lodge so planning to be at the top for first and second run should be easier for the kids – still give them some guidance though! The post race free-ski will be right after the end of the second run and awards will be one hour after the completion of the second run at the base of the lift.

Directions to Quechee (Please note these are different than years past – the covered bridge in Taftsville is still closed from Irene, as is the one in Quechee): Take 100 North (the right hand turn before Jackson Gore). In Plymouth, take a right onto 100A. When this dead ends at Rt 4, take a right. This will go through Bridgewater and Woodstock – watch for cops in both towns! The speed limit goes down to 25 twice – obey the speed limit. Continue through Woodstock and into Quechee. Go through a intersection with a blinking yellow light with some shops/gas stations around it. About 1 mile after this intersection, you will go over a bridge that goes over the Quechee Gorge. Just past the bridge take a left onto Deweys Mills Road. Just past the pond make a left onto Quechee Main Street. Go past Simon Pearce and the golf course will be on your left. Bear left at the fork and keep going. The Quechee Ski Resort will be on the right. Parking is on the right – either before or after the white building, which is the base lodge. It will take a little longer to get to Quechee than normal – I would set aside at least 1 – 1.25 hours.

Oh and just a quick note on some fun happenings this weekend in Ludlow: This weekend is the Lovin’ Ludlow Winter Carnival, a great community event with fun for everybody, kids & adults! For a complete event listing go to www.yourplaceinvermont.com. Your kids may enjoy the Warren Miller Movie Saturday night at 5:00 and then step outside and watch the parade down Main Street and walk on down the route to Dorsey Park and enjoy a real Vermont experience standing by the Bon fires, sipping hot chocolate, tasting chowda and watching a great fireworks display!

That’s it for now!

Thanks, Mariel

Hello All,

Great weekend of training last weekend! We were able to get in SL and GS work and the kids seem to be skiing great!

For this weekend, Okemo 1 is home training both days and Okemo 2 is home on Saturday and at Killington on Sunday for a GS race. Training days at home are according to normal schedule, with normal meeting place.

Saturday: Saturday will be a GS training day for both teams.

Sunday: Okemo 1 will train SL at home in preparation for next weekend’s Stubby SL. Okemo 2 see details below for info on the GS race at Killington.

Okemo 2 GS Race at Killington on Sunday:
Registration will be in the Killington Ski Club Building which is just up the hill to the right from the K1 Lodge, which is the lodge that is at the very end of the access road by the K1 gondola. Registration will begin at 7 AM and end at 8:15 am. Note that reigstration is NOT upstairs in the K1 Lodge like it used to be, but that you MUST keep your stuff in the K1 Lodge and apparently it is now a BAG FREE lodge, so you have to check your bags (new this year – not sure of details with that). Entry fee is $30 – CASH ONLY!! Bibs will be handed out at registration – remember to put it on your child right away and instruct them not to remove it. I recommend getting there early! Killington is a busier place than everywhere else we go!

Please note: Parent tickets are available for $50 – the fact sheet doesn’t specify but in the past it has been cash only at registration for these. It is also unclear from the fact sheet, but I think they may stop selling them at 8:15 am. Be aware of this.

We will meet the kids outside of the base lodge at 8:00 AM to head to the course for inspection and a free run. Please be sure that they are on time – the race trail is not right outside of the lodge so it is imperative they are on time to go for inspection. The race will be on Bunny Buster, which is most directly accessed by the Snowdon Quad or Snowdon Triple lift (whichever is running – quad at 8 am and triple at 9am) which you will get to by going under the K1 gondola and continuing straight until you come to either one (the triple is first and the quad a bit further). Once over there, the best way to lap on the course will be to ride the t-bar.

The race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am. The second run will begin right after the first, so there won’t be much time for a break. Additionally, Bunny Buster is a far way from the Lodge – help your kids magae their time. Full lunch is probably best left until after the race is completely over, but a snack and a quick warm up should work. We had some trouble last weekend with Okemo 1 being on time for starts – let’s not do that again : )!

There will be a post-race free-ski program again, which will be a lot of fun at Killington! (I think unless they changes things up since it is Super Bowl Sunday!) We will meet at the conclusion of the second run back behind the Killington Ski Club (Again, I think – listen for announcements during the race), which again is the building just uphill from the K1 Lodge. Your children will be split into groups and sent off with coaches from Killington, Okemo, and other mountains. They will return to the ski club after 45 min/one hour at which point the awards will be presented there.

Driving Directions:
From Ludlow, take a right onto Rt 100 North by Bella Luna. Follow this until it intersects with Rt. 4 (watch out for cops in Plymouth when the speed limit drops!). Take a left onto Rt. 4. Go past the gondola on the side of the road and keep going until you go up a big hill. The access road will be on your left. Follow it all the way to the top to the K1 Lodge.

Other News:
OMS Valentine Victory Camp: Those of you whose children have signed up, look for details on the camp in an email next week! Camp is now full and closed for registration.

Quechee Stubby SL Camp: This camp is also full – details to come next week, but you can basically plan on arriving around 7:30/7:45 am at Quechee (1 hr driving time) with your child for registration like on a race day.

Second Annual Okemo Mountain School Winter Festival! I hope you all received my email invite last week to the OMS Winter Festival on February 18 from 7-10 pm. It will be a lot of fun – great wine, beer, and food to sample, a silent auction, and music! Please also consider supporting OMS through our accompanying fundraising drive.

Please let me know if you have any questions, but I think that is all for now! See you this weekend!

Thanks,

Mariel
