Welcome to the U10 and U12 2017-18 Season

Friday, November 3rd, 2017

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

To those of you who are receiving an email from me for the first time – WELCOME TO U12 and U10s!  To the rest, welcome back :)!   Closer to Thanksgiving you can expect to begin hearing from me weekly.  For now, I am reaching out to you all with some preliminary information on the season.  I will re-send this when I have more emails of new families as well.

Please read U12.10 101 2017.18 Edition for LOTS of information about the program including training and race schedules (always subject to change) – this is helpful for new and returning families. There have been several updates for this season each of which is in bold and italics in the packet!   So even if you are an old pro, PLEASE read :)! If you have any questions after reading, don’t hesitate to be in touch.

We are scheduled to begin training on Saturday, December 2nd at 8:30 am.  Please note though that we do need a reasonable amount of open terrain in order to train on snow, so I will be in touch again as that date draws closer to confirm plans.  In the event that we are not able to train on snow, I will organize a dryland activity for all of the U12/10s.

Please read this entire email (and all emails that I send) and the attachment, as there is a lot of info that will be helpful for everyone – particularly, parents of first years.

Reminder! You can find this and every email I send on the OMARA blog –

U12/10 announcements are at this link specifically:

Also check out the U12/10 FAQs:

You can also access the U10 and U12 training and racing schedule (with very basic info) here:

Important Reminder on USSA and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12 or U10 must be a current USSA and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.  Both can be done online at and, respectively.  More info on these memberships is found in the attachment.  IMPORTANT: For USSA choose, Alpine Competitor U12 or Apline Competitor U10 (depending on your child’s age group), NOT General Member – this is not valid for competition.  Also your athlete’s club should be Okemo Mountain Ski Club or Competition Center….not Okemo Mountain School, unless they are enrolled for 2017-2018.

Competition Center Registration:  New this year Competition Center registration can be done online here:  Or by calling the Call Center 802-228-1600 or Kim in the Competition Center 802-228-1483.

Other important items:

The Annual Okemo Mountain School Ski Swap, one of OMS’ biggest fundraisers, is coming up!  To sell items in the swap, they must be dropped off November 11, 12, 15th from 10 am – 3 pm at the Sitting Bull.  The swap opens for business the following weekend, Nov 17-19 with the following hours: Nov 17 3-7 pm; Nov 18 9am – 5 pm; Nov 19 9 am – 1 pm.  I could still use some volunteers to help with the event – athletes or parents – please let me know if you are willing to help!  It would be greatly appreciated!

VARA World Cup Parade: November 25th – Those who have signed up to participate will receive more information closer to the event regarding details of the day.

The OMARA 2017-2018 Season Kick-Off Party and Annual Meeting: December 2nd from 5-7 pm at Siena (upstairs in the Round House at Jackson Gore).  More info to come.

The OMS Board of Directors’ Reception: December 9th at OMS in our NEW Fitness Facility (53 Main St in Ludlow) from 7 – 9 pm – a fun evening of seeing what’s new at OMS and mingling with fellow families – past, present, and future – while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and wine and beer!  A great way to learn about the opportunities that exist for your athlete at OMS!

Volkswagen presents Warren Miller’s Line of Descent Movie Premier: December 16th at OMS in the new Fitness Facility at 7 pm.  Tickets will go on sale via OMS’ new website when that is launched very soon….will send out more info soon!

Okemo Mountain School Holiday Hammer Camp: The Annual OMS Holiday Hammer Camp, which this year is from December 11th-15th, is open to any athlete who was in the U12 or U10 program last winter, no first year participants.  This is a great opportunity for some extra training and a taste of ski academy life!  Registration form and more info later, but just wanted you to have the dates.  You cannot yet reserve space in the camp. Please note that the camp is a very long day for younger athletes and it may not be the best idea for them. The camp will also be staffed by other U12/10 coaches, as well as OMS coaches.  Please note: THIS IS ONLY A DAY CAMP – no housing is provided.

That’s all for now!  I will continue to send more info as I gather more emails of new parents.  Both new and old parents are reminded to read all communication carefully.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.  I look forward to seeing you all soon, as do all of the other coaches!!

Thanks and Think SNOW!!

2017 VARA World Cup Parade – Response needed by 10/13

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Hello Okemo Competition Center Alpine Families plus a few recent alpine alumni!),

It is hard to believe it is already October!  I hope all is well!  Many of you are probably wondering about registration for the Okemo Competition Center programs this winter.  You should be hearing from Peter Cornish, Director of the Okemo Competition Center, very soon regarding sign-ups for this winter.  I know that you are able to call the Okemo Call Center (802-228-1600) right now to register (see info on programs and rates HERE), but soon you may also be able to register online as well. Peter has been working with IT on making this convenience available.   However, I am contacting you right now regarding the VARA Parade of Athletes at the World Cup in November.
As many of you know, Killington will again host the Women’s World Cup the weekend of November 25th and 26th.  It was amazing to see World Cup racing back in the East last winter and we are all very excited to have it back again!
On Saturday 11/25 VARA clubs are again being invited to participate in a Parade of Clubs prior to the start of the GS race.  We hope to have a strong contingent of Okemo participants like we did last year!  We had over 100 march in the parade, which was the most of any club!
Read on for details, but be sure to complete this SURVEY if your athlete wants to get a spot in the parade.
Details are still being finalized by VARA and the WC Organizing Committee, but here is what we know as of now:
1) We will be able to have a certain number of athletes march in the parade.  Hopefully, this number will accommodate all that wish to march, but our number could wind up being somewhat limited.  Your response now will help ensure all can march!
2) Okemo is going to generously provide busing again this year and our buses will be able to drive all the way to the K1 Lodge for drop-off/pick-up.  HOWEVER, every athlete will need to be accompanied by an adult to ride the bus and this adult will be responsible for this/these athlete(s) during the course of the day at Killington.  Coaches will serve as chaperones only during the staging of and marching in the actual parade and will be watching the race from the VARA viewing area where the parade will end.  Your athletes are encouraged to watch the race with their coaches so that they can ask questions, etc, BUT coaches will not be responsible for supervising athletes during the race or making sure they they get back on the bus at the end of the day.  Last year proved too logistically difficult with so many different families having different plans for their athletes and last minute changes to those plans.  With such large crowds present at the event, we feel the best way to ensure athlete safety is to have each family responsible.  Depending on response for taking the bus we may need to limit athletes to one parent on the bus with them.
3) Any athlete who wants to march in the parade but NOT ride the bus is welcome to march.  The athlete will need to meet the group at the staging area near the K1 lodge.
4) Approximate timeline for Saturday 11/25. Note this may change prior to the event and details regarding meeting places will come!
6 AM – meet at Okemo for bus transport (athletes must have an adult!)
7:30 AM – meet at the staging area for the parade.  Athletes are left with coach chaperones.
8:30/8:45 AM – Parade begins
9 AM – Parade ends at VARA viewing area.  Athletes reconnect with their parents/adult chaperone in/just outside the VARA viewing area.
9:30/10 AM – race starts
2 PM – approx. race end
3:30 PM – approx time for bus departure back to Okemo.
Since we need to provide a number of athlete parade participants to VARA this weekend, I am asking that you click this link ( to fill out a survey to indicate your athletes’ participation BY FRIDAY 10/13.  Please consider this a firm RSVP.  We also will need to work with Okemo to try and meet the demand for bus rides, so please reply accurately there too.  Both transportation and parade participation may be limited, and I may need to collect another set of responses later.  If you are interested in learning more about the parade, please make sure to fill out the survey, even if your response is NO.

Okemo Fit Day: Sunday, September 17th

Monday, August 14th, 2017
Dear U12 and U10 Families,
I hope this email finds you well and ready for FALL!  September is right around the corner, so I just wanted to send a quick reminder about the Upcoming Fit Day, plus a few other fun OMS items!
2017 Okemo Fit Day: Mark your calendars for this year’s Okemo Fit Day on Sunday, September 17th from 9 am – 1 pm on the Okemo Mountain School Front Lawn at 53 Main St in Ludlow (rain location: Jackson Gore Ice House).  Though the event goes until 1 pm, please plan to arrive no later than 12 pm so that you have adequate time to browse equipment – the vendors will be packed up by 1 pm.
All of the latest alpine race equipment will be there for you and your athlete to take a look at for the upcoming winter.  Skis will be there in all sizes to determine the right length and boots will be available in a range of sizes to try on.  Remember to bring ski socks for your athlete!  There also will be some poles, goggles, and helmets as well. Please note that you will not place orders directly with the race reps for each brand, but with a local shop that carries the brand you want.  Local shops will be at Fit Day to process orders should you wish to place them at that time.  Remember that our local Ludlow shops will honor race pricing for all Okemo athletes who are USSA members.  Race pricing represents a significant savings over regular retail.
While there will be largely alpine ski equipment at Fit Day, Freestyle Ski athletes will want to check out boots and can also take the opportunity to talk with shops about freestyle or freeride skis for this season.
And don’t forget to take part in the other OMS fun going on this summer and fall:
2017 OMS Benefit Golf Tournament at Tater Hill: Hopefully you all have received the invitation to this year’s tournament on Saturday, September 16th from Kate Foster and plan to join in the fun…or sponsor if you can’t make it.  It is always a great day and a nice chance to connect with winter friends in the off season! Check out info here…REGISTER here or SPONSOR here!
2017 Summer Online Auction to benefit the OMS Annual Fund:  Given the success of using the online auction platform Bidding for Good this winter in conjunction with the Winter Festival, we have decided to host a Summer Online Auction.  This is a great opportunity to support OMS from afar.  Wherever you are enjoying the summer, you can still support OMS by simply CLICKING HERE to check out the awesome items we have available!  The auction ends on Friday!
See you all soon and don’t forget to think SNOW!

U16/U19 Weekend of 3/25 – 3/26

Friday, March 24th, 2017

Hello all,

So we are at the end of an awesome season. Mother Nature was (for the most part) cooperative and we had some great training and some great races. Thinking back on the beginning of the year, we have seen all the kids in the U16 and U19s make huge strides in their skiing. I really feel that everyone had a very successful year. It was a ton of fun to work with all of you. Some of you we have coached since you were J4 and J5s and some we were meeting for the first time. It was really rewarding to work with all of you and I hope that you are developing a love for the sport that all of the coaches here are passionate about. It truly is a sport that you will have for a lifetime and can share with your friends and your family of any age or ability.

For this weekend on Saturday we have the Equipment Testing Day from 8:30-12:30 where all the race reps bring out next years product for you to try. This is a lot of fun and can really help you get a handle on the direction that you would like to go in regards to equipment for next year. We are very lucky to have this opportunity (very few programs do this) so big thanks to Mariel and Pete for putting it together once again! The tents will be set up at the Yurt for everyone’s convenience. Thanks also to Mountain Ops for getting all of the product there via snow cat. I have been doing this for a long time and watched how many competition programs run, and I will say that no one gets the kind of support that we get here at Okemo from the mountain! After the Hopefuls dual race on Wardance we will be leaving the dual course up for anyone to race. Parents, this is the time for you to show up your kids if you think you have the stuff! There will also be a barbecue starting at noonwith hot dogs and hamburgers. The Okemo Competition End of the Year Awards will be at 1pm also at the Yurt. After the awards for anyone interested we may set a GS course for some runs if the conditions allow. For Sunday there will be no training at Okemo. Sunday there is an open GS at Sugarbush that we will have coaching at. If you want to go and have not signed up please do it now. Going forward, there will be no more weekend training, however, there are some races that would be worth doing:

Sunday 3/26– Sugarbush GS
Thursday 3/30– Cochrans SL
Saturday 4/1– UNH Fundraiser GS at Loon (this will fill fast- sign up as soon as you can via the loon racing website,( ) The last day to sign up will be March 29!!)
Saturday 4/8– Stowe Sugar SL
Sunday 4/9– Stowe Sugar SL
It has been awesome working with everyone this year! I had a lot of fun, I hope you all did too! See you Saturday!

Thursday, March 9th, 2017

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

Just a quick update on a few things.
The Bromley GS on Saturday has filled up as I said it might.  No worries though, there is still Suicide Six for some Stubby SL racing OR training at home.  ***U12s will train full gate SL on Saturday 3/11, so please be prepared with armor.***
Details for Sunday’s U10 Skills Day and Team Dual Panel SL at Pico:
Registration: 7:30 am in the upstairs of the Andrea Mead Lawrence Lodge, which is in between the Pico Ski Club and The Ski Shop/Main Lodge (same as last year).  Have your athlete register themselves please!  As with any MVC “regular” season race for U10 or U12s, you do not need to register your athlete beforehand.  Entry fee is $30 (payable in cash or check payable to Pico Ski Club only), which includes your athlete’s lift ticket.  Please remind athletes to put their bibs on immediately and do not lose them!
We still have to leave our bags and get ready downstairs in the Main Base Lodge (park on the right hand side of the main parking lot and go straight through the condos – base lodge is on the right), not in the Andrea Mead Lawrence Lodge.
We will have an athlete meeting at 8:45 am in front of ski club which is at the at the base of the B-slope lift/bottom of the race trail (go out of the base lodge and go left if you are facing the mountain) and then athletes will go with their assigned groups for the Skills portion of the day.  Skills will go from 9-11 am, Lunch from 11-12 and athletes will meet their groups again at 12 pm in front of the ski club. The Dual SL will start at 12:45 pm and athletes will run once on each course.  Second run is reverse bib order.  Awards about 30 minutes after the completion of the dual.  The awards are based on the best team (team being the group that the athletes trained with in the morning).
All other details remain the same as I emailed on Tuesday.
Final Meisterschaft list be sent to you tomorrow for those still waiting on that info.

OMST 3/11-3/12 and Peace Park

Monday, March 6th, 2017

OMST Parents and Athletes,

We had our last USASA SVS events this weekend and kudos to parents and athletes for their continued support and dedication to our series. Everyone rode really well this year in all disciplines and we are lucky to have one of the best and most competitive series in the country!
Peace Park Qualifiers
As most of you know, there is a VERY large event coming to Okemo this weekend. If you are not familiar with Danny Davis, he is an Olympic snowboarder who has graced the podium in major halfpipe events including X Games, Dew Tour, and Grand Prix’s. He is also one of the most popular snowboarders in the world and is know for unrivaled style and pure snowboarding. Each year, Danny Davis and Mountain Dew host an event called Peace Park in Grand Targhee, WY which is built by Snow Park. The event is a big session featuring invited riders to throw down progressive tricks on a progressive “course”. Okemo will be hosting the only Peace Park Qualifying event in the country this weekend featuring some the country’s best am riders and invited riders. The event will take place in the Dew Zone and Halfpipe area and Snow Park will be in there building all week to create a one of kind course. This is going to be super fun and I hope everyone can drop by to watch throughout the weekend.
Weekend Training
Training will be as normal this weekend and coaches will be working with the kids on Crazy Train (as the Zone will be closed). It will be a little looser this weekend as I am sure that our OMST athletes will want to watch the Peace Park event a lot and on Sunday, the venue will be open at 12:30pm for everyone to ride and enjoy.
Nationals Picture
Nationals invites will be coming out this week and I hope that we will once again have a strong Okemo contingent representing our series in Copper.  I will be able to provide everyone who will be attending Nationals with all the details and costs when I know who is going. It’s looking like anywhere from 17-20 OMS and OMST athletes will receive invites!
