U12 and U10 weekend update 12/3 and 12/4

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

To those of you who are receiving an email from me for the first time – WELCOME TO U12 and U10s!  This is the first weekly update email of the season.  Below information for this weekend is general info that was sent out a couple of weeks ago which is helpful for first time and returning families alike!  Please read this entire email (and all emails that I send) and U12.10 101 2016.17 Edition!

Training will begin this weekend – we will have an altered meeting spot though.  We will meet at the top of the Sunburst Six at 8:30 am and 12 pm.  Instruct your athlete to get off the lift and go straight ahead towards Buck Horn as far as possible.  They will need to plan accordingly to arrive on time – as of now the AB quads aren’t open so you have to ride the Magic Carpet, to Sachem, ski Lower World Cup and then ride the Sunburst Six.  We will ski our normal AM and PM sessions (8:30-10:30 am/12-2 pm) on both Saturday and Sunday.  All athletes should be on their SL skis (it looks like new skis are ok – if a need for rock skis arises I will let you know).  We will be focusing on freeskiing to get some good early season miles and also work on stance and balance drills.  Looking ahead we will also be on SL skis December 10 and 11th.

***Friday training: Anyone who has signed their children up for Friday training (you must sign up for the “3 day” option with the Comp Center), training for Friday U10/12s will start on Friday, December 9th.  You will receive separate communication on this each week if you have completed registration for this.

Competition Center Registration:  New this year Competition Center registration can be done online.  Most returning families have not completed this yet – please do so ASAP – your child will not be able to train until it is complete!! Just click here: https://secure.adminsports.net/okemo

Don’t forget that Saturday, December 3rd, is the The OMARA 2016-2017 Season Kick-Off Party from 4-6 pm at Siena (upstairs in the Round House at Jackson Gore).  There will be a little quick club business taken care of and then a chance to meet coaches, learn about programs, and have fun with friends!  I will be there, as will other U10 and U12 coaches, and will be available to answer any questions you might have.  I look forward to seeing you all!

General Review Info:

Please read the “U12 and U10 101” attachment for LOTS of information including training and race schedules (race schedule always subject to change and has already changed since last sent!) – this is helpful for new and returning families.  It includes information about the program, some of which has been updated for this year, as well as race schedule info.  So even if you are an old pro, PLEASE read :)! If you have any questions after reading, don’t hesitate to be in touch.

Reminder! You can find this and every email I send on the OMARA blog – go2omara.com.

U12/10 announcements are at this link specifically:

Also check out the U12/10 FAQs:

Also new this year, you will be able to access the U10 and U12 training and racing schedule (with very basic info) here: http://go2omara.com/alpine-racing/schedules/u10u12-weekend-training-racing/

Important Reminder on USSA and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12/10 must be a current USSA and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.  Both can be done online at ussa.org and vara.org, respectively.  More info on these memberships is found in the attachment.  IMPORTANT: For USSA choose, Competitor U12 or Competitor U10 (depending on your child’s age group), NOT General Member – this is not valid for competition.  Also your athlete’s club should be Okemo Mountain Ski Club or Competition Center….not Okemo Mountain School, unless they are enrolled for 2016-2017.

Other important items:

The OMS Board of Directors’ Reception at OMS (53 Main St in Ludlow) from 7 – 9 pm – a fun evening of seeing what’s new at OMS and mingling with fellow families – past, present, and future – while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and wine and beer!  A great way to learn about the opportunities that exist for your athlete at OMS!  I hope you all received the invite I sent last week!

Okemo Mountain School Holiday Hammer Camp: The Annual OMS Holiday Hammer Camp, which this year is from December 12th-16th, is open to any athlete who was in the U12 or U10 program last winter, no first year participants.  This is a great opportunity for some extra training and a taste of ski academy life!  Registration form and more info later this week, but just wanted you to have the dates.  You cannot yet reserve space in the camp. Please note that the camp is a very long day for younger athletes and it may not be the best idea for them. The camp will also be staffed by other U12/10 coaches, as well as OMS coaches.  Please note: THIS IS ONLY A DAY CAMP – no housing is provided.

That’s all for now!  Both new and old parents are reminded to read all communication carefully.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.  I look forward to seeing you all soon, as do all of the other coaches!!

Thanks and Think SNOW!!
