DEVOs – Tons of Important Info!
Hello All,
Another beautiful, but cold weekend. The kids fought hard to defend the boot, but alas Pico was victorious! Well, we have another chance at it this weekend on our home turf! But before any race re-caps, I have some housekeeping stuff to take care of, so PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! Info on training times and race stuff will come later this week.
1) Race volunteers for our DEVO race at Okemo this Sunday: I need some volunteers to help with the race on Sunday, 2/7. I will need FOUR parents to help with registration from 6:50am-8:30am. I need ONE (or ideally 2 so there is a relief person) person to do scoreboard during the race. I need TWO people to do bib collection at the finish area during the second run and TWO people to help with bib sorting at the end of the race in the comp center – won’t take long and can be accomplished before awards. Please email me if you will be able to help out with a job.
2) OMS Valentine Victory Camp: I need responses for the OMS camp, which is next week (2/8-2/12), by Wednesday. If you are interested in sending your child, but have not yet told me, please do do ASAP. For those of you that I have down on my list, please return paperwork and a check or credit card number ASAP.
3) President’s week: We will have training during President’s week (2/15-2/19) and, of course, on the weekends surrounding it. We may take one day off during the week, just to let the kids rest, but that and the exact daily schedule are TBA.
4) Another camp opportunity: Quechee is hosting a one-day Mid-Vermont Stubby Slalom Camp on Friday, Febraury 26th. This is obviously a school day, but if your child is doing well in school, it would be a great reward! Myself and other Okemo coaches will be accompanying kids to the camp. This will be a great slalom training opportunity, as well as a great way to meet kids and coaches from other mountains. The cost is only $20 for the day, which will go from 8am-2:45pm. You will just have to provide transportation for your child and register them, similar to a race day, but then you would be free to leave for the day. Please email me by Monday, February 15th if you will be sending your child. Space is limited and will be first come, first serve.
5) DEVO Jackets: I am going to have DEVO jackets made, as I mentioned earlier. They probably won’t be done until around the end of February, but will be great for your kids to have for the rest of the season and the following year. I am working with Lori Ford and if she can source the right fabric, they will be black hooded softshells with embroidery on them. The cost will be around $80-100. I need to get a rough idea of order size. I had several people volunteer to help, but we will start with having you email Amy Scher (Eliza’s mom) – others may be called in for help later. Please email Amy (abscher@optonline.net) if you are interested in a jacket for your child (or yourself) – include an approximate size (we will nail down sizes later) child XS-XL or adult XS -XL.
And now drum roll please…the Pico race re-cap! (Killington to come later this week!)
Pico:
WHAT A DAY!! The sun was shining and the kids were ready to rock and roll. They rallied hard to bring the boot home…and did so in dramatic fashion!! I couldn’t have been prouder of the way the kids all seemed to really bring their “A game”!!!
J6 Girls: Mackenzie Laurion rocked the J6 world winning first by over 2 seconds!! She was the ninth fastest girl overall, which is quite a feat against some tough competition in the J4 and 5 girls. Saige Anapolle also had a great showing with a 7th place finish! Way to go J6 girls for all medaling.
J6 Boys: Nicholas Ambeliotis and Jay Schoudel – our lone wolves of the J6 boy world – had a good showing in 14th and 17th, respectively, in an unusually large field of J6 boys!
J5 Girls:Dolores White lead the charge for J5 girls bringing home the 5th place medal. Coco Schaaf had an awesome day bringing home 8th. Paola Loy brought out the animal and took home tenth! Just out of the medals were Eliza Scher (12th), Lydia Hill (14th) and Caroline Grace (15th). Way to go girls!!
J5 boys: Connor Laurion also had a awesome day placing 2nd is a very tough field! Sam Cowles unleashed an animal too and placed 6th. Followed by Luke Valentine, Carver Provance, and Luke Cuticelli in 7th – 9th, respectively. Also finishing in the top 20 were Spencer Tretter just out of the medals in 11th and Jack Lorenze in 18th. Overall, super showing by the J5 boys!!
J4 Girls: Lindsay Tretter led the J4 girls at Pico winning by over 1.5 seconds! Gwen Jaye had a great 4th place finish and Brittany Fitzpatrick an awesome 5th place. Deanna Bottomley took home 7th. Peggy Shemitz Wagner and Emily Faller were just out of the medals in 12th and 13th respectively. Nice work girls!
J4 Boys: THIS was where the drama was!! Despite lost bibs and late arrivals, these boys threw down! All of the J4 boys brought home hardware! Chase Jaye led the pack with the fastest time of the day – a 31.03! – to win gold. Right on his heels was Alex Milewski in 2nd and then Trevor Harker in 3rd. ONLY 0.17 seconds separated the three boys! In fifth place was Joe Werthan, in 6th Grant Anapolle and 7th Thomas Whalen. Awesome job boys!
Ok well keep an eye out for info about this weekend later in the week, but do read this one twice over and respond where necessary.
Thanks and have a great week,
Mariel
