Hopefuls 12/16-12/17

Wednesday, December 13th, 2017

Hope everyone is having a great week. It’s a winter wonderland here in VT now, we got over a foot of snow yesterday and the skiing is fantastic. We’re looking forward to skiing with the Hopefuls this weekend.

Our plan, as usual, is to meet at the Sugar House at 9 am ski with our teams until 11 am, returning to the Sugar House. We’ll re-group at noon and ski until 2 pm, again returning to the Sugar House.

It looks to be a cold weekend so please have your children dress warmly in layers. We try to stay out for the 2 hour session, but will go in if kids are cold. It might be a good idea for your child to have some money for a hot chocolate if we go in.

Our upcoming training schedule is as follows:

12/16, 12/17 (Sunday program), 12/23, 12/26, 12/28, 12/30, 12/31 (Sunday program). The first race is 1/6/18.

We’re looking forward to a great season skiing with your children. As always, if you have questions please email Pam or Jim at [email protected] or [email protected]

U12 and U10 Weekend Update 12/16 and 12/17

Tuesday, December 12th, 2017

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

Greetings from snowy Ludlow!  Close to six inches on the ground and still snowing! Thank you to all who came out Saturday for The OMS Board of Directors’ Reception at OMS in our NEW Fitness Facility!  It was great to see so many U10/12 Comp Center Families! If you couldn’t make it to this event and still want to support OMS with a “holiday gift,” check out our Wish List online!

Weekend Training Info: Saturday and Sunday we will be on SL skis (no armor needed, but if your child has shin guards they can wear them – NO chin bars) for freeskiing, drill work, and some drill course training according to our normal schedule. Looking ahead we are on GS skis 12/23 and 12/26-29 also.

PLEASE see my note below on USSA and VARA memberships and double check that you have registered your child for both – even if you think you did earlier in the summer, check again!  It’s a lot of extra work for me when families don’t have this done.

***Friday training: Anyone who has signed their children up for Friday training (the “3 day” option with the Comp Center) is receiving separate communication on this each week.  If you haven’t actually signed up yet, I won’t know you are doing Fridays and you won’t receive emails on this.  If you want your child to drop in for a Friday here or there, that is fine, but you must email me by Tuesday of that week to ensure we can accommodate your athlete staffing-wise and then you must pay a drop in fee to Kim in the Comp Center.***

A few reminders and important info:

1) Please read U12.10 101 2017.18 Edition for LOTS of information including training and race schedules – this is helpful for new and returning families.  It includes information about the program, some of which has been updated for this year, as well as race schedule info.  So even if you are an old pro, PLEASE read :)! If you have any questions after reading, don’t hesitate to be in touch.

2) You can find this and every email I send on the OMARA blog – go2omara.com.  U12/10 announcements are at this link specifically: http://go2omara.com/category/announcements/u10u12-announcements/ Also check out the U12/10 FAQs: http://go2omara.com/alpine-racing/u10u12/devo-program-faqs/ Also you can access the U10 and U12 training and racing schedule (with very basic info) here: http://go2omara.com/alpine-racing/schedules/u10u12-weekend-training-racing/

3) USSA and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12/10 must be a current USSA and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.   If you think you have done both PLEASE double check!!  Every year I have to chase families down to get this done – let’s break that streak!!   Both can be done online at ussa.org and vara.org, respectively.  More info on these memberships is found in the attachment.  IMPORTANT: For USSA choose, Competitor U12 or Competitor U10 (depending on your child’s age group), NOT General Member – this is not valid for competition.

4) Volkswagen presents Warren Miller’s Line of Descent Movie Premier is now SOLD OUT!! Please keep it in mind for next year.  Okemo is doing a screening on 12/26 if you missed out on the OMS screening: https://www.okemo.com/event/warren-miller/

5) Winter Break Schedule: We will train during winter break, but there is no training on December 24 or 25. The days for winter break training are December 26-31. We are not training on January 1 or 2.  We will hold training on December 30th for those not in the End of the Year Open (see next item).  We will train according to our normal daily schedule during this time, unless I tell you otherwise. If your child can’t make it every day, it is not a big deal – I know many of you work and can’t be here the whole time, that school breaks differ, and that you have holiday obligations.  Please note, there will be training on Saturday, December 23rd, but we will do a condensed day with training from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Training on Friday 12/22 is part of the 3-day program, so your child would need to be registered for that or sign up in advance (email me by next Tuesday) and pay a drop in fee to Kim in the comp center (see note above).

6) End of the Year Open: There is an open GS race for U14 and U12s at Okemo on December 30th. You must enter your child yourself unlike the rest of the normal season races. Registration is NOW OPEN here: https://adminskiracing.com/node/121487  This race fills fast – sign up NOW!   Your child must be current with USSA and VARA to enter. Please be aware that if your child is still a U10 (7, 8, or 9 years old by Dec 31) they are not eligible. I also ask that you do not register your child if they are new to U12s (as in just moving up from Hopefuls or joining the program) – this race will be very intimidating for them and not a good intro to the year!  Racers who aren’t current with VARA will be kicked out of the race at the deadline – so get current!  This race fills up fast, but there is plenty of room for now.  PLEASE NOTE: As Okemo athletes, your children are entitled to a discount though you must initially pay the full price.  In order to get the discount, you will need to let Kim know on the day of the race at registration when your child picks up their bib.  She will then credit your payment method via adminskiracing.

That’s all for now!  Keep thinking snow!

Mariel

Greetings Team Devo !

Thursday, December 7th, 2017

Greetings Team Devo !

Welcome back to our returnees — and welcome aboard to our first-time attendees.   We’ll be meeting up for the first time this Saturday, 12/9 (details below).    Our roster will take final form as we add a few more faces over coming weeks.   We’re assured of a solid squad; large enough for all to make new friends, small enough to maintain our group’s personal feel.

And as the season starts, a quick note on a few items ….

* Logistics

Look for us (the two most dashing senior ski bums clad in matching red jackets) at the top of the A/B, off to the far side of the trail on skiers’ right at 8.25 am.  Departure will be near 8.30.

Our group will ski the morning and break around 11 am, shed the goggles and facemarks, re-test name and face recognition and in the spirit of camaraderie, have the group eat together.   We will generally break at Sugar House — but might opt for Jackson Gore on those days we’re hucking cliff jumps and cornices in the back country.  (OK, maybe not.)

Near high noon, we’ll jump back on snow for another two hours.  Around 2 pm we’ll set the group free — ready for you to serve up much-deserved hot chocolate. Please make sure your daughters/sons have lunch money and means to connect with you at the end of the day.

No de-merits if your son/daughter can’t participate on any given day — but for planning purposes, please drop me a note if he/she will be absent.

* Holiday Week Schedule

We will meet on Saturday, 12/23, Tuesday, 12/26, Thursday, 12/28 and Saturday, 12/30.  Thereafter, Saturdays until the next holiday break.  We’ll be checking everyone’s availability and update info on other holiday/school vacations as those dates draw closer.

* Early Season Routine

Back to basics, yes.  Balance, body position, fore and aft pressure are front and center for these early weeks.  Nothing glamorous, but critically important  even for the most experienced skiers during early season.  Maybe you’ll get a laugh, maybe a yawn, or maybe a groan about feeling uncomfortable, but each of these skills builds for real improvements as the season progresses.   We’ll keep you posted on progress in the time ahead.

* Equipment

Mike and I will talk with you if any equipment modifications are necessary. We like to keep it simple, but the proper tools are critical for safety — and executing on the skills we’re looking to build.  In the past we’ve sometimes recommended stiffer, longer skis, better fitting poles or most importantly, appropriate boots.  (We’ve also politely consulted in those rare instances of extreme goggle gap.) But seriously, in all cases, keeping skis sharp and tuned is vital.  We’ll gladly do an instructional tuning session a few weeks into the season.

* Terrain

Last year offered significant opportunity to ski the entire mountain — hence our group honed stylish turns in the glades on many weekends.  Let’s hope for similar conditions this season and we’ll quickly progress from groomers to the Nastar course, moguls and glades.

* Homework

For this week’s assignment, please have your daughter or son prepped with enthusiasm, willingness to make some new friends and a big smile.

Stay tuned, the fun is about to begin.

As always, feel free to reach out with thoughts or questions.

See you on the snow,

Bill and Mike

OMST 12.9_12.10

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017

OMST parents and athletes,

It was great to see everyone last weekend and we had a large group with some new members and the stoke level was high! Snowmaking will resume towards the latter part of the week which should ensure better coverage and some new trail openings. Rumor has it from the mountain ops department that a sub cold spell will be hitting the area over the weekend which should allow for a huge snowmaking effort by Okemo going into mid December.
Weekend schedule 12/9-12/10
8am Meet at Sitting Bull
8am-11am: Training
11am: 11:45 lunch
11:50-1:30pm Training

U16/U19 Training 12/2 – 12/3

Thursday, November 30th, 2017
This coming weekend will likely be the first day on snow for many of you. Our primary goal is simply to get some miles on snow. We will be on SL skis both Sat. and Sun. working on fundamental drills. We will meet at 8:15 at the base of the Black Ridge Triple next to the yurt. We will ski 8:30 to 11:30. Lunch will be from 11:30 to 12:30. Then we will continue skiing until 2:00. If it is your first time of the season, please make sure your bindings are at least set to the correct boot length that you will be using. Common sense yes, but I see it every season and we end up losing time on snow. Although training space for drill courses is not yet confirmed, be prepared with proper gear to run brushes, stubbies, and possible full gates. I will confirm later in the week and blast an email to let you know for sure. As far as race and training schedule the best way to look ahead and prepare is this link. It is live and consistently up to date: http://go2omara.com/alpine-racing/schedules/u16u19-weekend-training-racing/

WE ARE MEETING AT THE BASE OF THE SOLITUDE LIFT AT 7:25 SHARP BOTH SAT. AND SUN FOR A SL GATE/DRILLS TRAINING BLOCK ON LOWER SAPPHIRE TRAIL. ATHLETES WILL NEED TO BE DROPPED OFF AT THE BASE OF THE SOLITUDE QUAD WHICH IS ABOVE EPIC RESTAURANT IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR. (MAP ATTACHED WITH CIRCLED LOCATION) THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME BLOCK OF TRAINING!

ALSO AN IMPORTANT THE EARLY LIFT OPPORTUNITY IS TO BE RESPECTED AND LOADED WITH COACHES PRESENT. BE AWARE THAT THERE WILL BE GROOMERS AND SNOW MACHINES ON THE MOUNTAIN AND POSSIBLE TRAIL CLOSED ROPES. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION TO OUR VENUE ON LOWER SAPPHIRE.

I THINK THAT I HAVE ADDED ALL ADDITIONAL EMAIL REQUESTS, BUT IF I HAVEN’T LET ME KNOW.
Thanks to everyone. I look forward to getting this race season started.

-Cody

2017 VARA World Cup Parade – Response needed by 10/13

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Hello Okemo Competition Center Alpine Families plus a few recent alpine alumni!),

It is hard to believe it is already October!  I hope all is well!  Many of you are probably wondering about registration for the Okemo Competition Center programs this winter.  You should be hearing from Peter Cornish, Director of the Okemo Competition Center, very soon regarding sign-ups for this winter.  I know that you are able to call the Okemo Call Center (802-228-1600) right now to register (see info on programs and rates HERE), but soon you may also be able to register online as well. Peter has been working with IT on making this convenience available.   However, I am contacting you right now regarding the VARA Parade of Athletes at the World Cup in November.
As many of you know, Killington will again host the Women’s World Cup the weekend of November 25th and 26th.  It was amazing to see World Cup racing back in the East last winter and we are all very excited to have it back again!
On Saturday 11/25 VARA clubs are again being invited to participate in a Parade of Clubs prior to the start of the GS race.  We hope to have a strong contingent of Okemo participants like we did last year!  We had over 100 march in the parade, which was the most of any club!
Read on for details, but be sure to complete this SURVEY if your athlete wants to get a spot in the parade.
Details are still being finalized by VARA and the WC Organizing Committee, but here is what we know as of now:
1) We will be able to have a certain number of athletes march in the parade.  Hopefully, this number will accommodate all that wish to march, but our number could wind up being somewhat limited.  Your response now will help ensure all can march!
2) Okemo is going to generously provide busing again this year and our buses will be able to drive all the way to the K1 Lodge for drop-off/pick-up.  HOWEVER, every athlete will need to be accompanied by an adult to ride the bus and this adult will be responsible for this/these athlete(s) during the course of the day at Killington.  Coaches will serve as chaperones only during the staging of and marching in the actual parade and will be watching the race from the VARA viewing area where the parade will end.  Your athletes are encouraged to watch the race with their coaches so that they can ask questions, etc, BUT coaches will not be responsible for supervising athletes during the race or making sure they they get back on the bus at the end of the day.  Last year proved too logistically difficult with so many different families having different plans for their athletes and last minute changes to those plans.  With such large crowds present at the event, we feel the best way to ensure athlete safety is to have each family responsible.  Depending on response for taking the bus we may need to limit athletes to one parent on the bus with them.
3) Any athlete who wants to march in the parade but NOT ride the bus is welcome to march.  The athlete will need to meet the group at the staging area near the K1 lodge.
4) Approximate timeline for Saturday 11/25. Note this may change prior to the event and details regarding meeting places will come!
6 AM – meet at Okemo for bus transport (athletes must have an adult!)
7:30 AM – meet at the staging area for the parade.  Athletes are left with coach chaperones.
8:30/8:45 AM – Parade begins
9 AM – Parade ends at VARA viewing area.  Athletes reconnect with their parents/adult chaperone in/just outside the VARA viewing area.
9:30/10 AM – race starts
2 PM – approx. race end
3:30 PM – approx time for bus departure back to Okemo.
Since we need to provide a number of athlete parade participants to VARA this weekend, I am asking that you click this link (https://goo.gl/forms/DkiBJqRN1Kq4UOgU2) to fill out a survey to indicate your athletes’ participation BY FRIDAY 10/13.  Please consider this a firm RSVP.  We also will need to work with Okemo to try and meet the demand for bus rides, so please reply accurately there too.  Both transportation and parade participation may be limited, and I may need to collect another set of responses later.  If you are interested in learning more about the parade, please make sure to fill out the survey, even if your response is NO.
Thanks!
Mariel
